Cancer Care Walk For Hope:
9/30/07
Page updated 11/23/07
A few days after Mike was diagnosed, we spent a sunny afternoon with him,
his family and many of our friends in his parents' back yard.  Despite the news
he had just received, Mike was optimistic.  Indeed, instead of focusing on
himself, Mike spoke to me enthusiastically about helping other people that he
believed were worse off than he was.  You see, within days of his diagnosis,
Mike had essentially taken inventory of his life.  He realized he had
tremendous resources he could draw on to help in his fight -- he was smart
and emotionally tough, he had medical insurance and some money in the bank,
and perhaps most importantly, he had a loving family and many friends to
support him.  Immediately, Mike realized that not all cancer patients were as
"lucky" as he was.  Thus, while I was trying not to be frightened by just how
sick he was, Mike was busy telling me (quite enthusiastically) that he wanted
to start a foundation to help people deal with the financial and emotional
burdens of cancer.  Of course, I told Mike that such an organization already
exists:   CancerCare.   ~ Dana Anglim
